Chromium-free alkaline refractories are once again concerned by refractory industry

Refractory material is a kind of non-metallic material that is resistant to high temperature, small volume change after heating and rapid temperature change, and it is also the basic material of high temperature industry. Without the refractory material, any high temperature industry will no longer exist.

However, due to the use of raw materials, refractory materials will produce toxic substances at high temperature, which once caused serious harm to the human body and the environment. For example, when magnesia chrome brick is used at high temperature, the trivalent chromium inside will be converted into hexavalent chromium. The hexavalent chromium is toxic and soluble in water, causing damage and pollution to the human body, environment and groundwater resources.

Because the cost of chrome-free refractories is higher than that of chrome-containing materials, downstream manufacturers do not strictly require to purchase chrome-free refractory materials when purchasing refractory materials. This is also an important reason why chrome-free refractory material has been widely promoted although they are been developed successfully for many years.

Luoyang Refractory Materials Research Institute Co., Ltd. of China demonstrated the feasibility of using chromium-free refractory MgO-CaO-ZrO2 and magnesium iron-aluminum spinel material for the firing zone of cement rotary kiln. It is also pointed out that the MgO-CaO-ZrO2 material is suitable for use as a kiln lining for Portland cement.

The case shows that there are environmentally friendly refractory products on the market that can completely replace magnesia chrome bricks. However, to achieve chromium-free production, the relevant state departments need to establish a complete compulsory regulations for chromium-free products to limit the production and use of magnesia-chrome bricks. On the one hand, it restricts the production of magnesia-chrome bricks by refractory companies, on the other hand, to strengthen the supervision of pollution emissions from cement. At the same time, policy subsidies or guidance will be required for environmentally friendly chromium-free refractory manufacturers and enterprises.

Refractory manufacturers also need to strengthen technical innovation and research and development, accelerate the speed of environmentally friendly refractories, and also consider reducing the cost of material production, so that downstream application industry in the use of chromium-free refractories, their performance and cost of use are better than magnesia chrome bricks, so that it can be more quickly promoted in the market.
