The difference between insulation bricks and fireclay bricks

Insulation bricks and fireclay bricks are commonly used refractory products and thermal insulation materials in kiln furnaces and various high-temperature equipment. Although they are brick refractory products, their performance and use are completely different. Today, we will introduce the main functions and differences between them.


The main function of the insulation brick is to keep warm and reduce the loss of heat. Generally, it does not directly contact the flame, while the refractory brick contacts the flame directly. Fireclay brick is mainly used to withstand the flame roasting. It can be divided into two types: unshaped refractory products and shaped products. Shaped refractory products, generally made of refractory bricks, have a standard shape and rules, can be temporarily processed as needed.


1. Refractoriness: The refractoriness of insulation bricks is generally below 1400 degrees, while the refractory bricks are above 1400 degrees.

2. Thermal insulation performance: The thermal conductivity of thermal insulation bricks is generally 0.2-0.4 (average temperature 350±25°C) w/mk, however refractory bricks is more than 1.0 (average temperature 350±25°C) w/mk . It can be concluded that the insulation performance of the insulation brick is much better than that of the refractory brick.

3. Density: Generally, insulation bricks are lightweight insulation materials, the density is 0.8-1.0g/cm3, while the refractory bricks is basically above 2.0g/cm3. In a short, refractory bricks have high mechanical strength, long service life, good chemical stability, high temperature resistance,no chemical reaction with materials and the highest heat resistant temperature can reach 1900 °C. It is especially suitable for hot blast stoves and heating converters in the steel industry.

The function and distinction of refractory bricks and thermal insulation bricks are very different, the environment and scope of use are different, too. Therefore, different materials will be used in different locations. When purchasing materials, we should decide to use refractory materials suitable for our actual situation.
